ERDesigns is growing

Over the past months, ERDesigns has grown beyond its original focus on embedded systems, runtimes and developer tooling. The website has now been updated to better reflect what ERDesigns is today: an independent software engineering practice building complete products and the technology behind them.

That work now spans native desktop applications, high-performance C++ engines, document processing, TypeScript tooling, compilers and runtimes, cloud services, and embedded systems.

The updated website brings these areas together and provides more room to show the products and technology being built.

ERD-Playlist Studio is now available in Beta

One of those products is ERD-Playlist Studio, which is now publicly available as a Windows Beta.

Built natively in Delphi, Playlist Studio has grown from a playlist editor into a complete IPTV playlist and media application. It combines playlist management and editing with provider integration, stream checking and repair, TV guide support, playback and Live TV, recording, downloads, casting, media libraries, automation, CLI tooling and more.

The new product pages include documentation and screenshots showing more of the application in action, and the Beta can now be downloaded directly from the ERDesigns website.

Coming soon: ERD Document Cloud

The next releases will introduce two new developer-focused services, starting with ERD Document Cloud.

At its core is a document ingestion engine built from scratch in C++. Rather than depending on large external document-processing frameworks, the engine reads and interprets supported document formats itself.

Documents can be processed through a common intermediate representation while still retaining format-specific structures where they matter. A request can ask for only the information it needs — from plain extracted text to richer document structures, relationships, metadata and embedded resources.

This makes the service useful for applications that need to understand documents without necessarily transferring or processing everything contained in them.

Coming soon: ERD Report Cloud

ERD Report Cloud approaches documents from the complementary direction.

Its high-performance C++ reporting engine turns structured data and report definitions into output formats including PDF, DOCX, images and printer-native label formats. An embeddable visual designer built in TypeScript provides the design experience on top of the same reporting model.

The goal is to make report and document generation easy to integrate without requiring customers to operate the rendering infrastructure themselves.

Designed to run lean

Document Cloud and Report Cloud share an important design principle: the underlying engines are intentionally small, fast and largely self-contained.

Their SaaS deployments do not require large application servers or a collection of external processing services. They are designed to run on inexpensive, conventional web infrastructure while the native C++ engines perform the heavy work.

That has practical benefits beyond performance. Fewer dependencies and lower compute and memory requirements mean simpler deployments, fewer moving parts and substantially lower infrastructure costs.

It is also part of how ERDesigns approaches sustainable software engineering: doing more useful work with less compute, memory and infrastructure rather than compensating for inefficient software by continually adding more resources.

More to come

These changes are part of a broader direction for ERDesigns: building complete software products while retaining control over the technology underneath them.

Whether that means a native Delphi application, a C++ document engine, a TypeScript designer, a compiler and runtime, or software running on an embedded device, the underlying principle remains the same: understand the system end-to-end and build only what is needed to make it reliable, efficient and useful.

ERD Document Cloud and ERD Report Cloud are currently being prepared for release, with more information coming soon.
